On Wednesday, October 18, the Feast of St. Luke (Evangelist), Rachel Tome and Molly Williamson from Glenmary Home Missioners came to visit our 7
th and 8
th grade students. The 7
th grade had collected school supplies and other donations as part of their service project over the summer. Rachel and Molly were happy to take these back to Glenmary for use by students in the Appalachian missions.
Since October is World Mission Month, Miss Thome, the Office Projects Coordinator of Glenmary’s Mission Education and Ministry Office gave a presentation to help students understand the WHY behind Glenmary’s missionary work and to encourage missionary zeal in their own lives. Students did an engaging “Call to Mission” cup stacking activity using yarn and rubber bands to move their cups from one desk to another without their hands. The movement of the cups represented one’s spiritual journey and the final pyramid represented one’s union with God.
Glenmary’s mission is to meet the material and spiritual needs of the individuals in their missions and to
accompany men and women on their spiritual journeys. Jesus calls EVERYONE to proclaim the Good News and share his love. However, not everyone is called to be a missionary in rural Appalachia. How might you respond to Jesus’ call to mission in your own life?
