The PTO generously sponsored, "Radom Acts of Math," an evening for parents of students in grades preschool through 6 to discover ways to sneak in math mastery at home. Third grade teacher Mrs. Pam Zipperer and Accelerated Math Teacher Mrs. Anne Flick shared ideas for connecting home and classroom math studies and for building on school math lessons with everyday activities at home. Parents created four games and activities to take home to play with their kids, and they made extras for the classrooms! Beach ball math challenges have children catching beach balls to answer everything from single-digit addition problems to classification of polygons. Participants got red and yellow dice for various dice games, working up to operations with negative integers. The group created a class set of rekenreks, the hot new tool to help students "subitize" as the learn addition and subtraction up to 10, then 20, then 100. Finally, every family, as well as a few classrooms, now has a set of tangrams to challenge all ages!
